FM Poposki meets counterparts, EU officials in Brussels

Foreign Minister Nikola Poposki met late Friday in Brussels with Serbian and Cyprus counterparts, Vuk Jeremic and Erato Kozakou-Marcoullis respectively, councilor at the European External Action Service and facilitator in the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue Robert Cooper, as well as European Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response, Kristalina Georgieva.

Poposki congratulated Jeremic on Serbia's EU candidate-status, voicing readiness for enhanced bilateral cooperation in the Euro-integration context, as well as importance for progress of EU's accession process for all Balkan states. Jeremic reaffirmed his nomination for President of the 67. UN General Assembly, asking for Macedonia's support in this regard.

At the meeting with the councilor at the European External Action Service and facilitator in the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue Robert Cooper, FM Poposki saluted the agreement on Kosovo's representation at regional meetings. Moreover, he briefed Cooper on the preparations for the Southeast European Cooperation Process (SEECP) Presidency, which Macedonia undertakes from Serbia this June. Moreover, talks tackled the recent start of the Macedonia-EU high-level  dialogue, with Cooper welcoming the commitment and the constructive approach of the Macedonian Government.

The meeting with European Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response, Kristalina Georgieva was held within the ceremony on occasion of Macedonia's accession to the EU Mechanism for Civil Protection, which is a network coping with disasters, whereas the country obtains access to Union resources in dealing with a wide range of catastrophes. FM Poposki stressed Macedonia's accession to the Mechanism was of enormous significance, due to the exchange of know-how, best practices and flow of information when responding to large emergency cases in Europe and beyond.

Poposki and Erato Kozakou-Marcoullis referred to the priorities of the Cyprus EU Presidency that starts on 1 July 2012. The Cyprus FM stressed EU's enlargement with Balkan states would be among the Presidency's top priorities, guided by the wider European interest. FM Poposki reaffirmed Macedonia's commitment for sooner start of accession negotiations towards preserving the Union's credibility over its enlargement policy. Moreover, they agreed on the benefit from the enhancement of bilateral relations and communication.
