FM Poposki: Infrastructure for Balkan integration in European project
Since the EU is a political union, political criteria should be applied in the region's networking. Infrastructure does not serve only for transport of people and commodities, but for the Balkan's integration in the European project, said Foreign Minister Nikola Poposki in his address at Western Balkans ministerial "Improved Connectivity and a Strong Core Network", held in Pristina on Wednesday.
Enlargement Commissioner Johannes Hahn said at the event the EU would allocate EUR 1 billion for enhancement of infrastructure in the Western Balkans.
"This is a substantial effort and with the appropriate loan-financing leverage it could bring about significant connectivity improvements to the region, boosting overall competitiveness, leading to growth, job creation and a real improvement in the lives of all who live here", said Hahn.
Minister of Transport and Communications Mile Janakieski also attended the conference, which focused on the European Commission's methodology over determining priority transport corridors, exchanging opinions on the proposals for harmonization of the key transport network in the Western Balkans.
"Networking of regional states will lead to increase of investments, but also enhance ties among people across borders and toppling of stereotypes", the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a press release.
The next regional meeting is to be held in Macedonia.
