PM Gruevski: Government declares state of emergency to boost control of migrants' inflow
The Government's temporary measures related to inflow of migrants are aimed to provide for their more efficient transit through Macedonia, Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski told reporters on Thursday.
The Government said today it decided to declare the border regions of Gevgelija in the south and Kumanovo in the north as crisis regions due to unprecedented inflow of refugees from the Middle East, pouring in Macedonia from Greece.
Macedonian is a transit route of migrants and it is very important how the country will deal with this challenge, Gruevski said.
Since adapting a law on migrants, their number has increased from 500-600 per day to over 2.500, the PM said. The number of migrants is expected to grow up to 3.000-4.000 per day, he added.
The transit of migrants through Macedonia creates various problems for them and the local residents. Hence the Government has identified the need of applying temporary instruments, enabling dignified transport of migrants through Macedonia, which means better control of their entrance in the country so that it could grant them the necessary assistance, Gruevski said. Macedonia, he said, has no capacity to help to such a large number of migrants.
Under the Government's decision both police and the army will from now control the country's southern and northern border regions in order to stop "the massive" influx of migrants coming from Greece.
This measure is being introduced for the security of local citizens who live in the border areas and better treatment of the migrants.
