EU membership remains on top of agenda: PM
European integration remains on the top of our agenda. I expect the Paris summit to produce concrete agreement benefiting the region's Euro-integration process, which is also in the Union's interest, said Prime Minister Emil Dimitriev, who heads the Macedonian delegation at the 3. Western Balkans Summit of the Berlin Process.
"This is a continuation of the Berlin Process between the EU and the Western Balkans, managed by the Union's most powerful countries, which only confirms the event's importance. EU's intention coincides with the one of the Western Balkans, which is Union accession. This remains on the top of our agendas and I believe the summit will produce concrete agreement on issues that are important for the Western Balkans, but also EU in general", said Dimitriev prior to the summit.
He added that the event would focus on the refugee crisis, including Macedonia's contribution to its management.
"We will affirm everything that has been done in the refugee crisis management, since Macedonia acted as credible EU partner in this regard. We have done a lot in preventing the consequences of this crisis. We managed the crisis by using mostly our resources and not much financial assistance from European partners. Discussions will focus on migrant smuggling, illegal crossings and integrated border management, which we will salute because we believe the issue will be addressed in a systematic way", said PM Dimitriev.
Regarding security, he said it is highly important following events in Paris, Brussels and Istanbul.
"This issue requires a coordinated and comprehensive approach. Radical and terrorist structures transit our countries and enter Europe. Cooperation among security services and information exchange for the purpose of undertaking joint operations is the most appropriate way to fight this evil", stressed Dimitriev.
The summit will also discuss the countries' European perspectives.
"We will reaffirm our aspirations by stressing that the launch of EU accession talks will have positive effects in Macedonia. Our plans in the reform process are linked to the EU accession talks", underlined PM Dimitriev.
