Environment minister, Metrudhem officials discuss Veles smelting plant
A final decision involving the restarting of Veles-based smelting plant will be reached in a transparent fashion in line with procedures, laws and scientific arguments, it was concluded at a meeting Saturday between Minister of Environment and Physical Planning Abdilaqim Ademi and representatives of Metrudhem company.
The minister said that the scope of the study hadn't been determined yet, thus a decision could not be expected in this stage.
"The scope of the study will include all interested parties, all scientific arguments will be taken into consideration and final decision is going to be reached in a transparent procedure," Ademi stated.
On Monday, the potential investor is set to submit a letter of request after which the ministry needs to determine the scope of the study regarding plant's impact over the environment.
Ademi said that company's officials had showed readiness to respect the final decision if the study revealed that the led and zinc smelter would harm the health of people and the environment.
Metrudhem spokesman Aleksandar Bilbilov stated that the legal procedure would be observed and that the final outcome of the study based on scientific arguments would be respected.
