Macedonia fights fuel price hikes with lowest taxes: PM

Increase of oil prices is a global event, but our advantage is that we have lowest taxes in Europe and we are firm in keeping them as they are, although the entire continent has increased them. Macedonia is providing a better climate for its citizens compared to other countries, Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski told journalists on Saturday.

"We are trying to secure as much lower taxes for citizens during these unpleasant developments in Europe and the world", said Gruevski after putting into use reconstructed road section Rastak-Cresevo.

He stressed that almost all EU countries have recently upped the VAT, something which burdens fuel prices.

"Moreover, the personal income tax in most countries is higher compared to Macedonia, and we also have the lowest profit tax in Europe", said Gruevski, adding that Macedonia is one of the few countries that has held ground in these difficult times of global crisis and Europe's debt crisis.

Compared to other countries, Macedonia has the cheapest diesel fuel (EUR 1,22). Consumption of diesel fuels in Macedonia is three times higher than the one of gasoline.
