PM Gruevski meets U.S. congressmen

Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski met Thursday with a delegation of the U.S. House of Representatives, including congressmen David Dreier, David Price, Jim McDermott, Erik Paulsen and Gerry Connolly.

The meeting addressed several aspects of the friendly Macedonia-U.S. relations, which are at a strategic partnership level.

Gruevski briefed the guests about the Government's strategic priorities - Macedonia's accession to the European, Euro-Atlantic organizations, economic development and attraction of foreign investments, implementation of the Ohrid Framework Agreement and nourishment of good inter-ethnic relations, fight against organized crime and corruption, judicial reforms, as well as investments in the education and science.

Referring to Macedonia's foreign policy priorities in terms of the EU, NATO membership, Gruevski informed the congressmen about all ongoing activities to that effect, namely the launch of a high level accession dialogue with the EU and its contribution to NATO-led international missions, which in practice makes the country a member of the Alliance.

He also reaffirmed the country's strong commitment to finding a mutually acceptable solution to the dispute over its constitutional name, imposed by Greece, the only obstacle standing on Macedonia's road to joining the European, Euro-Atlantic organizations.

Gruevski extend gratitude for the initiative, thus far supported by 54 members of the U.S. House of Representatives, Macedonia to be invited to join NATO at the forthcoming Chicago Summit.

The congressmen said their visit to Skopje aimed at reaffirming the US support of Macedonia and further advancing of the cooperation with its Parliament.

The meeting also reaffirmed the mutual long-term interest in further developing of Macedonia-U.S. relations.
