Ohrid hosts international conference on Balkan Security and Euro-Atlantic Perspectives
NATO, EU membership are Macedonia's strategic objectives and everybody should do its best to contribute to turning them into reality as soon as possible, Defense Minister Fatmir Besimi said Friday in Ohrid at the international scientific conference "Security and the Euro-Atlantic Perspectives of the Balkans".
These objectives promote peace, stability and democracy for the members countries, Besimi said, pointing out that after Chicago, Macedonia will remain on its road to the Euro-Atlantic integration.
He pointed out that three Alliance's Summits in row had recognized Macedonia's successful meeting of membership criteria.
It also refers to the country's contribution to NATO-led peace missions, Besimi said.
"We believe in these values and are capable to provide peace, security and stability not only at home, but also abroad, namely wherever necessary," Besimi said.
Macedonia's accession to NATO and the European Union is the country's top priority, Interior Minister Gordana Jankuloska said.
The issue of security is not a matter of a moment, but one that requires long-term strategy and regular upgrading of human, technical resources engaged in this sphere, she said.
Each country, she said, should set up powerful, all-inclusive security system, capable to efficiently respond to all threats. It should also be flexible for cooperation and interaction with other security systems, Jankuloska said.
By preserving the national security, Macedonia has been contributing to the regional security, she added.
The international conference has brought together about 100 representatives of the Southeast European countries to discuss the Balkan Euro-Atlantic perspectives, security risks and their management.
