FM Poposki: Greece to overcome grudge and stop obstructing Macedonia

Greece's election is not expected to bring a government, which is going to be able to promote more serious solutions to the name dispute, as it will be preoccupied with debt servicing, according to the EU, NATO ambassadors to Macedonia.

Hence it is necessary for the Greek blockade to launching Macedonia's EU accession talks, which is also considered as illogical by EU members, to be surpassed.

"These conditions impose the need for seeding up (Macedonia's)negotiation process with the EU. We have a high-level accession dialogue, but I believe that launching of the negotiations is going to be a serious step forward and after a long period of objections, a sign of constructiveness by Greece," Poposki said after he hosted a working lunch in Berovo for EU and NATO ambassadors.

Greece may hinder Macedonia at every stage of accession talks, but their official start will enable the country to deliver results in all spheres related to the EU membership, Poposki said.

It will help us to improve the performance in terms of meeting the necessary standards, harmonizing the national with the EU legislation, he said. It will only take Greece to overcome its grudge and act in more responsible manner, Poposki told reporters in regard to a possibility for Macedonia's EU accession talks and name row settlement negotiations to run simultaneously.

Today's meeting in Berovo addressed the outcome of recent NATO Summit in Chicago and the pace of Macedonia's EU integration process. The EU, NATO Ambassadors voiced support for this process, which, as they said, is becoming rather complicated due to the discouraging developments in Greece.

This debt crisis scenario in Greece brings neither economic nor political benefit to Macedonia, Poposki said.

"Most of the country's attention is focused on forthcoming elections, something we don't wish to have any affect on the bilateral (name) negotiations. What we expect is for any Greek government to demonstrate better awareness of and commitment to the EU, NATO goals," Poposki said.
