FM Poposki: New Greek government, Cyprus EU Presidency - opportunities for steps forward

Commitments for steps forward regarding EU enlargement by the new Greek government represent an excellent start and open new possibilities for Macedonia's Euro-integration. This opportunity can definitely be used, especially if one takes into account Athens' influence on Cyprus, which currently holds the EU presidency. However, we respect concrete gestures, said Foreign Minister Nikola Poposki at Monday's briefing.

He welcomed the composition of the government in Greece, reiterated Macedonia's constructive position, pointing out there are numerous possibilities for specific activities and gestures that would build bridges between the two countries.

"All possibilities at disposal should be used and the Greek government should confirm its constructiveness through gestures, thus confirming its commitment to sustain the enlargement process of all potential candidates. I believe the fact that Cyprus is undertaking the EU presidency opens an enormous opportunity, especially taking into consideration the fact that enlargement decisions concerning Macedonia are taken in Athens. We would like to see this opportunity seized", added Poposki.

Although the Cyprus Presidency priorities do not mention Macedonia, FM Poposki says "the door should be left open, so that decision-makers show that they truly want to help towards an integrated, prosperous and peaceful Balkans".

He also referred to the reaffirmation of Macedonia's initiatives towards building a climate for enhancement of bilateral relations.

"I believe it is significant to highlight these initiatives, since they include specific examples of cooperation, which can yield positive effects on both sides of the border. A favorable climate is not built only through statements, but concrete moves", said Poposki.

He said there are no announcements from UN envoy Matthew Nimetz over new initiatives or meetings, but more intensive activities could be expected following the composition of the new Greek government.
