Reeker reaffirms US support of Macedonia's NATO and EU membership
The US remains a strong supporter of Macedonia's Euro-Atlantic integration and welcomes the country's high-level accession dialogue with the EU, Deputy Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs, Philip Reeker, said Tuesday after meeting with the Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski.
"I've congratulated PM Gruevski on what Macedonia has been doing in regard to the high-level accession dialogue with the EU. As you know, the US strongly supports Macedonia's integration with the EU and NATO, which is our policy in regarding the country and the entire region, something I am responsible for at the State Department. Obviously the high-level accession dialogue presents a good opportunity for the country to keep on with reforms in significant spheres, such as the rule of law and media freedom. These are important issues we have discussed on several occasions and will keep raising. The reform process is a good opportunity and we are encouraging its progress," Mr. Reeker said.
Today Mr. Gruevski and Mr. Reeker expressed satisfaction with the Macedonia-US relations and the cooperation in all spheres of mutual interest, expressing readiness for their further advancement, the Government's Information Service said in a press release.
Their talks also included Macedonia's European and Euro-Atlantic integration processes, in particular the country's high-level accession dialogue with the EU.
Mr. Gruevski reaffirmed the Government's commitment to completing the reforms for overall progress of Macedonia.
PM Gruevski and Secretary Reeker also discussed about the Macedonia-US partnership and cooperation in NATO-led peace missions, the press release reads.
