Macedonia must apply green economy policies
Macedonia is one of the countries where the impact of climate changes will be felt the most. In order to maintain a sustainable development, it needs to focus its policies on green economy. The Word Bank has conducted an analysis, which is expected to provide guidelines for preparing policies and an action plan.
"Data show that Macedonia will be especially vulnerable to climate change. Therefore, it has to be invested in energy efficiency, sustainable use of natural resources and innovations and green jobs," said WB's Regional Coordinator for South East Europe, Jane Armitage.
Water i.e. its use will be treated as priority, because "the water we have won't be sufficient," according to Vice PM for Economic Affairs, Vladimir Pesevski.
"If the existing policies are applied, then there will be greater negative effects," Pesevski stressed adding that attention would be paid on energy efficiency, urban planning, use of public transportation.
Both Pesevski and Armitage urged that people must change their behaviour and habits, despite having new policies.
The analysis, which is divided into sectors, has been conducted in Macedonia for the first time. It includes a scenario without changed policies, a green scenario (modest adjustment measures) and a super green scenario with ambitious measures. The analysis covers energy supply, transportation, urban aspects, air pollution and agriculture.
