Janakieski: EU to assist development of SEE infrastructure projects
The European Union and its members should invest efforts towards supporting the creation of conditions for enlargement of the new trans-European transport network towards Southeast Europe, thus obtaining increased support in the implementation of capital infrastructure projects in regional countries, said Minister of Transport and Communications Mile Janakieski in his address at the 8. annual meeting of ministers on the development of the South East Europe Transport Observatory (SEETO) Comprehensive Network, held in Zagreb on Tuesday.
Minister Janakieski presented the capital projects for construction and overhaul of the railway and road infrastructure in Macedonia.
"In 2011 we managed to complete the construction of Corridor 10 motorway section Kumanovo-Tabanovce, a new airport was built in Skopje, whereas the one in Ohrid was modernized", he added.
Janakieski also referred to the projects currently implemented, such as the construction of motorway section Demir Kapija-Smokvica and Corridor 8 railroad section Kumanovo-Kriva Palanka.
The meeting is attended by delegations from all regional countries, as well as officials from the European Commission, EU member-states, international financial institutions and transport-related organizations.
SEETO is regional transport organization established by the Memorandum of Understanding for the development of the Core Regional Transport Network signed in 2004 by the governments of Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, the United Nations Mission in Kosovo and the European Commission. The aim of the SEETO is to promote cooperation on the development of the main and ancillary infrastructure on the multimodal SEETO Comprehensive Network and to enhance local capacity for the implementation of investment programmes as well as data collection and analysis on the SEETO Comprehensive Network.
