Mother Teresa monument to be built in Skopje
With symbolic unveiling of a plaque on Macedonia square, a project for building a memorial dedicated to Mother Teresa was launched on Friday. It is a gift from her second homeland, India, and a donation from the company Sahara India Pariwar, whose owner Subrata Roy is paying a visit to Macedonia.
The statue will be erected in honor of the work of the Skopje-born humanist and Nobel Prize winner. Mother Teresa carried out her mission to help the poor and sick people in India.
No details were provided on the monument's design and size and it is not yet known when its construction will begin.
Businessman Subrata Roy and PM Nikola Gruevski in their speeches said that Mother Teresa was an inspiration and the link for the two friendly nations.
"What we and the rest of the world can do for her is quite insignificant compared to what she had done for us and for future generations. We have been charged to spread her thought, to preserve her memory and to pursue her mission. It is the least we can do," PM Gruevski stated.
The memorial, he added, will be a symbol of mutual inspiration, love and respect for the work of Mother Teresa by the people of Macedonia and India.
At the event, the Indian billionaire spoke about her modesty and sense of humor, but most importantly her unconditional love for children and the destitute.
"The memorial which will be built is going to be her great home, not only a statue. I propose to call it a monument of humanity," Roy said.
Several ministers, mayors and businessmen were in attendance at today's ceremony.
