EUR 1,26 billion to be invested in energy sector until 2017

EUR 1,26 billion will be invested in construction and overhaul of infrastructure facilities in the sectors of electricity, natural gas, heating, oil and oil derivatives, according to the projections of the Programme for implementation of the Energy Development Strategy 2013-2017.

"The Programme for the Strategy's realization aims at meeting all needs of the Macedonian energy sector, creating appropriate conditions for economic growth", Economy Minister Valon Saraqini said at Friday's promotion.

According to him, EUR 467 million will be required for realization of the projects through Macedonian Power Plants (ELEM), EUR 400 million for public-private partnership projects, EUR 160 million for projects of private investors, and EUR 110 million for Electricity Transmission System Operator of Macedonian (MEPSO) projects. The state will allocate EUR 60 million for the gas distribution system, whereas local authorities will provide EUR 15 million.

Experts say investing in energy is crucial since Macedonia is export-dependant.

"The programme will enable the generating of new jobs and significantly contribute to energy efficiency", said academician Abdulmenaf Bexheti.
