The EU integration process of Macedonia is not exclusively in the jurisdiction of state institutions, but it is also a commitment of the entire society. Each and every one of us need to contribute in order the goal to be met, urged Deputy PM in charge of EU integration, Fatmir Besimi in his address at a conference held Wednesday in Skopje.

"EU integration is an important, complex and a relatively long process. We need to build capacities in order to implement Macedonia's EU integration process. At the same time, those capacities should be prepared in a bid to be competitive on the European market and to be prepared equally as any other citizen and institution in EU countries in fulfilling and respecting the standards applied in the Union," he said.

We are aware of the importance of the process for Macedonia and the other countries in the region, because Europe's perspective has proven to be one of the main catalysts leading to substantial reforms and strengthening democratic standards, according to him. "European and Euro-Atlantic integration is also vital because it provides peace, stability and economic development."

"In order the process to be effective, we need resources. Thus, I think that the establishment of a network of experts, who have acquired experience at renowned EU institutions and work on EU-related issues, could provide important support and knowledge in the negotiation process," the Deputy PM stated.

UK Ambassador to Macedonia, Christopher Yvon concurred that the EU integration process required engagement by the entire society.

"In addition to state institutions, the contribution of individuals, the civil sector is essential as well as to share the acquired knowledge for the common good of the country. EU integration is your task, your responsibility," the Ambassador noted.

The conference titled "Embedding EU Expertise" was organised by the European Policy Institute with support provided by the UK embassy.
