Promotion of a book on cultural diplomacy

Cultural diplomacy, defined as soft, sophisticated power in the international relations, is less known sphere in Macedonia and the region in comparison to some countries across the globe, where the cultural is vanguard of the political, economic diplomacy.

This has been a driving power for Vasko Sutarov to research  and compare how and to which extent the most powerful states use the culture for their presentation worldwide.  Since 2006, he has analyzed cultural policies in foreign relations of about 30 countries that resulted in a study, titled 'Public and Cultural Diplomacy', promoted Tuesday by the publisher 'Matica Makedonska'.

In addition to researching, Sutarov's work is a also a result of his experience as former chair of the parliamentary commission for culture and incumbent Director of Macedonia's Cultural-Information Center in Sofia.

The task of cultural diplomacy is to create the best possible image for the own country and for it to be embraced, stir emotions and bring the nations together, which is the culture's mission, Sutarov said.

I believe that the world is still a field for cultural competition among the peoples where Macedonia is able to present all of its comparative advantages, he added.

Culture Minister Elizabeta Kanceska-Milevska believes the book will contribute to the development of political science in Macedonia.

"This exceptional book, aimed above all for diplomats, but also for scientists, analysts, cultural workers and media, will open many new topics beyond the framework of traditional diplomacy, as well as new prospects of and challenges to contemporary diplomacy through the prism of the international cultural exchange," Kanceska-Milevska said.
