Minister Jankuloska, FIA President and AMSM representatives sign cooperation memorandum

Minister of Interior Affairs Gordana Jankuloska, President of the International Federation of Automobilism (FIA), Jean Todt and representatives of the Auto-Moto Association of Macedonia (AMSM) signed Thursday a memorandum of cooperation.

MoI will put its active capacities at disposal, Jankuloska said, in an effort to contribute to the global campaign within the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020, initiated by the United Nations and FIA.

"It's extremely important that the campaign is not short-term, but it is a decade-long campaign dedicated to improving safety on roads. I'm saying this not only as a minister, but also as a citizen because we all feel the consequences and threats from reckless drivers," she stated.

FIA President Todt - who has met with country's top officials - said he had seen a huge motivation in Macedonia, which was "full of culture and respected history."

"Energy between sports and mobility is of great importance in achieving good results related to road safety," Todt stressed. He said he was impressed with the establishment of a body such as the National Council for Road Traffic Safety.

The FIA President underlined that 1.3 million people die in traffic accidents and the number was likely to rise without adequate measures.

"In order to improve the situation, road infrastructure must be advanced, better technologies should be installed in vehicles and people should be better trained," he said.

In recent years, there are 8 victims of traffic accidents per 100.000 inhabitants in Macedonia.
