Despite NATO summit outcome, reforms will continue - DM Besimi
Regardless of the outcome of the NATO summit in Chicago, Macedonia's efforts toward Euro-Atlantic integration will not be changed. Our reforms and efforts made to join NATO are not directly linked to the Chicago summit.
This was stated by Minister of Defense Fatmir Besimi, who opened Wednesday a round-table titled "Macedonia, the Region and Euro-Atlantic Integration." The event was also attended by ambassadors and military attaches of NATO countries, members of the parliamentary defense and security committee, former defense ministries and representatives of the NATO advisory teams.
"We'll work on it everyday prior to Chicago and after Chicago. Whether the Alliance will be enlarged at the summit or not, Macedonia already has an open invitation. If the political issue between Macedonia and Greece is solved, irrespective of the summits, it can be made formal in line with NATO procedures for ratification in certain states. Whatever happens at the upcoming summit in Chicago, the outcome will not change Macedonia's positions and efforts for Euro-Atlantic integration," DM Besimi stated.
He said that Macedonia resumed its defense refroms, adding that NATO and EU were still country's top priority. "NATO and EU membership is overwhelmingly supported by the citizens and there is political consensus. Macedonia's admission to NATO will contribute to peace and stability in the region," the Minister stressed.
US Ambassador Paul Wohlers once again reiterated his country's stance noting that Macedonia had implemented many good defense reforms, its troops played a crucial role in maintaining world peace, voicing hopes that Macedonia would join NATO in due time.
It is vital for Macedonia not to lose sight of its objective, Dutch Ambassador Marriet Schuurman urged, adding that the objective was better, more prosperous and safe life for the citizens of Macedonia, the region, Europe and beyond.
"Yes, a better world starts from home. It starts with the reforms that are being implemented by Macedonia, including defense reforms. Efforts made toward regional cooperation and neighbourly relations are obviously important as well. Macedonia's participation in peace missions in the world is highly praised, Schuurman said.
