Jankuloska: Number of false asylum seekers dropping, intensive efforts still being made
The number of so called false asylum seekers from Macedonia is dropping, but this fact shouldn't make us passive in terms of halting all ongoing measures, Interior Minister Gordana Jankuloska stressed on Wednesday.
"On the contrary, we will continue working with the same intensity as in 2011 when Macedonia in order to address the issue had taken many measures to act in a preventive and repressive manner, Jankuloska said after attending a regional conference on the Decade of Roma Inclusion 2005-2015.
She added that preventive measures taken by the government and relevant institutions included an intensive campaign in which many settlements with predominantly Roma population were visited as well as many municipalities across Macedonia in an attempt the citizens to learn more about the essence of the visa liberalization.
Changes to the law were also made envisaging stricter fines for those abusing the visa liberalization.
"Repressive measures have been also taken. In addition to criminal charges for bus transporters and travel agencies, many Macedonian citizens who were unable to present credible evidence for their departure, were prevented to leave the country," Minister Gordana Jankuloska said.
