Poposki: Macedonia remains committed to NATO and EU membership

Macedonia remains committed to its strategic goals and interests – admission to NATO and EU. We will continue to act as member state of the Alliance and our expectations and aspirations are the same prior, during and after the NATO Summit in Chicago, Foreign Minister Nikola Poposki said Wednesday answering journalist question after the working breakfast with the diplomatic corps.

- Regarding the expectations prior, during and after the NATO Summit in Chicago they are unchanged. We have said that even prior to Summit. We did not have any expectations from the summit since it was not enlargement summit. It is important to show that we have capacity to as member state of the Alliance and to continue to behave as country, which is focused on realising its rights, strategic goals and we are heading in this direction, Poposki said.

He added that so far there are no serious signals from Greek side for the support of the process of integration for the countries in the region as well as for resolving the name dispute. Unlike Greece, Macedonia remains committed to its resolving, Poposki said.

What’s lacking is the response from the other side, Poposki said adding that after all the importance of the legal aspect of judgment of the International Court of Justice in the Hague in regard to the name dispute should not be minimised and underestimated.

Asked to comment latest developments in revealing parts of proposal of the mediator Matthew Nimetz in 2005, Poposki said that it has two dimensions.

- The first is institutional. Everyone that violates the law should be held accountable according to the laws. The latter is the political. In this context I consider that we, as the Republic of Macedonia, have interest for maximum cohesion and maximum focus of what is our strategic goal. The citizens in Macedonia expect that we should focus on achieving our goals – NATO and EU membership, FM Nikola Poposki said, adding that Macedonia should act at the level of protection of its interests, and as he implied, they are very clear.
