Culture Minister visits archaeological site in Ohrid

The Minister of Culture Elizabeta Kanceska-Milevska, together with the chief of the Cultural Heritage Protection Office, Pasko Kuzman and the head of the Ohrid-based "Institution and Museum", Tanja Paskali-Buntaseska, visited the archaeological site Mancevci on Saturday, where valuable archaeological relics have been unearthed during excavations for construction of apartment buildings.

"An early Christian basilica dating from the IV or V century with a well-preserved mosaic has been found. We should pay attention to these important findings and present them to the public at home and abroad," Minister Kanceska-Milevska said.

She added that the Ministry of Culture had singled out funds intended for the construction of bearing walls around the site to protect the locality and nearby apartment buildings.

Archaeologist Pasko Kuzman said that the site was considered to be one of the nine early Christian basilicas in the ancient town of Ohrid.

The archaeological site of Mancevci is in the vicinity of the church St. Sophia. It was discovered accidentally during construction works for three apartment buildings in Ohrid.
