Saraqini: EC positive assesses country's economy

The European Commission Progress Report notes many positive developments in the economic sector, even in crisis circumstances. Progress is noted in several segments, but also shortcomings, said Economy Minister Valon Saraqini at Sunday's press conference.

"The EC report acknowledges the Government's efforts towards improvement of the situation in the national economy and doing business conditions. The report highlights the importance of macroeconomic stability in the country, especially in turbulent global circumstances. This confirms the effect of several packages of measures that the Government has undertaken in order to cope with the crisis", said Minister Saraqini.

In the section of functional market economy, the report provides a clear picture that market and price liberalization has been achieved, whereas regulations have been fully harmonized with the EU acquis.

The report also notes serious progress in the free movement of services and commodities, as well as free movement of human capital.

"This points to the fact there are good grounds for further development of the free market and economy in general", added Mr. Saraqini.

Pertaining to competitiveness, he said serious progress has been noted, resulting from the adoption of several laws related to the real sector and facilitation of doing business conditions.

"The report also refers to the improvement in the export quality. Products with added value have a significant portion in the export structure, which is a result of the Government's efforts to attract foreign investors and opening of new production facilities. The change in the export structure reflects the operations of companies, such as Johnson Controls and Johnson Matthey, which take up 16 percent of total exports", said Minister Saraqini.

Weaknesses noted in the report refer to the lack of quality workforce, small budget for SMEs and crafts, insufficient use of European funds for entrepreneurship and innovations etc.
