Government wraps up project for procurement of new public transportation buses
As of Thursday, Skopje's Public Transportation Enterprise has 312 new buses at its disposal - a donation by the government and the ministry of transport and communications worth Euro 57 million.
The final 64 double-decker buses and 15 open top double-decker buses, manufactured by the Chinese company Yutong, were promoted today at an event attended by Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski, Minister of Transport and Communications Mile Janakieski and Skopje Mayor Koce Trajanovski.
"Today, we are completing the project nobody believed in... no one for over 30 years made any attempts to replace at least part of the old fleet of buses. We have addressed this issue clearly and unambiguously. A promise was made to purchase new buses and the promise was fulfilled. What others failed to accomplish in 20 years, we have done it in two years," PM Gruevski said at the promotion.
The new buses, he added, started arriving in early 2011 and now kicking off 2013 we can say that public transportation buses in Skopje have been completely replaced.
"The promise is fulfilled and the goal is attained. Skopje got a revamped public transportation in line with all European standards," stated Mr. Gruevski.
Transport Minister Janakieski said today's inauguration of the new buses wrapped up a project realised by the government as part of its programme.
"Finally, the residents of Skopje will be driven in new and modern buses after we have procured 16 mini-buses, 80 low-floor ones and 200 double-deckers bringing back Skopje's old flair with a style reminiscent of the mid 20th century," Mr. Janakieski noted.
