EBRD offers substantial investment support for Macedonia's infrastructure projects

Macroeconomic indicators show that Macedonia is making substantial progress in comparison to SEE countries, and has been recovering much better than the euro-zone members, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) President, Suma Chakrabarti, said Monday in London after meeting Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski.

The indicators show significant progress in terms of providing solid investment conditions, Chakrabarti said. He notified the high unemployment rate, saying that it has been declining, which is important for both the EBRD and the Macedonia's Government.

Chakrabarti also highlighted the advanced business climate, saying that in every country he visits he tells authorities to learn from Macedonia’s example.

Thus far, the EBRD has invested EUR one billion in 60 projects in Macedonia, Chakrabarti said. A total of EUR 80 million were invested in 2013. There will be more funds next year for energy, industrial projects at a regional level, the EBRD President said.

Next year Macedonia should register a GDP growth of 3.2 percent and see substantial investments in infrastructure projects, he added.

Today's meeting mostly addressed the future projects, as the current ones are advancing as planned, Gruevski said.

We have reviewed Macedonia's economic indicators, such as the GDP growth of 3.3 percent in the first six months of this year, which surpassed all projections of the international institutions and the fact that the country is the forth low-indebted state in Europe, Gruevski said.

Gruevski and Chakrabart also discussed the possibilities for fresh cooperation in construction and refurbishment of roads and EBRD participation in Macedonia’s gasification project.

"The EBRD has been one of top Macedonia's partners for the last 15-20 years, granting financial support to many projects, almost all of them successfully completed. In a way, the EBRD took significant part in the country's economic development," Gruevski said.
