FM Poposki: NATO enlargement not to wait for crisis

Foreign Minister Nikola Poposki met Wednesday with U.S. Vice President Joseph Biden during the NATO enlargement conference organized by the Atlantic Council in Washington.

The meeting focused on the necessity for continuation of the NATO enlargement process.

"It is important for Macedonia that the enlargement process remains credible. Currently much is said about observance of the international law and significance of trans-Atlantic relations, stability and prosperity on the Balkans. I believe everyone should bear their own responsibility, including member-states. For us it is significant that one member-state demonstrates preparedness and contributes to the idea of Europe whole and free. It is also significant that enlargement decisions are not passed under the pressure of a certain crisis", said Poposki after the meeting.

Vice President Biden, who closed the Washington forum, said the NATO enlargement was a process that had not been completed, whereas the United States would work on the idea of united Europe.

"We need to speak about the path we have passed, but also the one in front of us, since it is not complete. Enlargement of the Euro-Atlantic community has been one of the strongest movements for promotion of peace, prosperity, security and democracy. Now, seeing the Russian actions in the Ukraine, some say maybe we should not have given security guarantees to Poland, Bulgaria, Romania and the Baltic states, but I believe we needed this since we refuse spheres of influence created on the back of the people who deserve freedom. Let me be clear, the current crisis is not related to the NATO enlargement. We will not sit still until Europe is finally whole, free and in peace. This is possible only if we stay united and committed", said Biden.

FM Poposki also met with House Committee on Foreign Affairs Chairman, Ed Royce. Interlocutors focused on the Ukraine developments and their reflection on the Balkans and integration of regional states.

Moreover, Poposki met with Congresswoman Candice Miller, chair of the Macedonia Caucus, who has announced a new resolution for Macedonia's support over its NATO accession.
